If you're interested in starting a career in private security, one of the first questions you'll encounter is:

Should I obtain a Level II or Level III license?

Here's what you need to know.

What Is Level II?

Level II is the entry-level security certification in Texas.

After completing the required training through a licensed school, you'll be eligible to work as a non-commissioned (unarmed) security officer.

Common assignments include:

  • Office buildings
  • Apartments
  • Retail centers
  • Construction sites
  • Warehouses
  • Schools
  • Churches

Level II provides an excellent foundation for beginning a security career.

What Is Level III?

Level III training prepares individuals to become commissioned (armed) security officers.

In addition to classroom instruction, students complete:

  • Firearms training
  • Range qualification
  • Use-of-force instruction
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Defensive tactics concepts
  • Weapon safety

Level III officers may work armed assignments for licensed security companies.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Level II If:

  • You're new to the security industry.
  • You want to begin working quickly.
  • You're seeking entry-level experience.

Choose Level III If:

  • You're ready for additional responsibility.
  • You meet the eligibility requirements.
  • You want to qualify for armed security positions.
  • You're looking to increase your earning potential.

Many security professionals begin with Level II before advancing to Level III as their careers grow.
